SZCZECIN CHALLENGER NEWS & NOTES
*Welcome to the final Challenger preview for 2026. I added these in as an homage to Damian Kust, one of the good ones who was part of the tennis community and unfortunately passed far too soon early in 2026. I also wanted to do it to challenge myself to learn more about the Challenger circuit that Damian covered better than anyone and I mean ANY …. ONE. I’ve only done a handful this year, but plan on adding in more in 2027 and beyond to continue to try and promote Challengers a fraction of the way that Damian did.
*Last year’s Szczecin Open was won by unseeded pair Molchanov-Pichler over another unseeded pair in Liutarevich-Pujol Navarro 3-6, 7-6(1), 10-6. The champs were 1.65 (-153) favorites in the final. Their win was the sixth straight for the favorite in the Szczecin final. The super tie break finish broke a run of consecutive straight set finishes in the championship match. Overall, there have been three super tie break finishes in the final in the last five runs of this tournament.
*Super tie breaks were on short supply overall in 2025 though with only three total. Besides the championship match, there was one in the opening round and one in the quarterfinals. That was actually one more than 2024. 2023 was the last time this tournament saw a plethora of super tie breaks with six of the 15 completed matches needing the extra frame to settle the score.
*Seeds made it through round one unscathed in 2025 with three wins and one walkover. That was a contrast to 2024 when two of the four seeded pairs went down in the opening round. 2023 had also seen two seeded pairs go one and done. The last three years have seen at least one unseeded pair make the final with the last all-seeded final in Szczecin being in 2022. As with many Challengers, expect the unexpected when it comes to seeds. Often, there’s not a whole lot separating the seeds from the unseeded pairs at this level.
*On that note, let’s check out this year’s seeded field. The top seeds, Kestelboim-Romboli, will be pairing for just the second time. The last coming in 2024. That’s part of that “expect the unexpected” formula for seeds with a lot of changes from week to week in pairings at this level. Kestelboim does come in hot after winning the Sevilla Challenger with Barrientos. The Argentinian has bounced between Challengers and the ATP this year, going 36-17. Challengers, clay in particular like Szczecin, has been his playground with five titles with four different partners. He’s also made four other finals. The second seeds are home-standing Polish players in Matuszewski-Pieczonka. They’ll play their 2nd tournament together having made the San Marino semifinals in late July. The three seeds are ones to watch with Croats Kalender-Serdarusic. They’re 20-3 this year, one of the more experienced pairs in this field. They have four titles on clay and have made the final in the last four tournaments they have played. The four seeds contain half of last year’s championship pair with Molchanov pairing with Cervantes. They too have a lot of match play together this year at 18-13. They lost the Sevilla Challenger final last week. They’ve made three clay Challenger finals this season.
With the way a lot of Challengers play out, there’s also room for an Unseeded Menace to make a big run to be in the finals mix. Let’s take a look at some pairs in this Szczecin field that could wreak havoc this week.
Rodriguez-Vega Hernandez
This pair has played one this season back in late May and made a final on clay in Cervia in Mexico. Rodriguez also has a couple of Challenger titles this season. One of those included a win over a pair led by Kestelboim. Why is that important? That’s the pair they get first-up this week, the top seeds Kestelboim-Romboli. An early win and they could be on their way to another final.
Martos Gornes-Walkow
Walkow gets the home cooking in this one and this pair has played plenty together with a 22-10 record in 2026, all of that coming on clay. They have four titles this season at this level and will be a dangerous duo.
Cornea-Jans
This could be the lightning-in-a-bottle first time pairing to watch this week. Cornea hadn’t done a lot this season until last week when he made the Tulin final, losing in a super tie break. Jans is having a solid season at 36-16. He’s made six Challenger finals this year, winning four titles. Obviously this is boom or bust as a first-time pairing and they have to get past the two seeds to start, but there’s some reasons to believe they could gel and give some hell to the seeds early.
ONE AND DONE WATCH
Last year was a clean run for the seeds in the opening round, but hope springs eternal for unseeded pairs chasing the early upset. Let’s take a look at the pairs who may have a shot to send a seed packing in round one.
(1)Kestelboim-Romboli
As I laid out early, this is a pair without reps together since 2024. Two talented players for sure, but they’ll be matched against Rodriguez-Vega Hernandez who did make a final in their lone appearance together in 2025. The top seeds are the kind of pair that likely can get on a roll and win this thing if they escape this early potential trap spot.
(2)Matuszewski-Pieczonka
The Polish pair showed prowess in their lone tournament together, but also went to tie breaks in three of the six sets played during their semifinal run in San Marino. That means we could see a tight match in round one against the previously mentioned Cornea-Jans. I could be totally off on my feeling with that pair having a shot here, but if they serve well, it would seem like they have a real shot to keep things tight and try to steal a set in a tie break. That could change the entire complexion of the match.

TOP HALF
This first quarter looks like an intriguing one with a pair of my Unseeded Menaces sitting here in Rodriguez-Vega Hernandez and Martos Gomes-Walkow. Along with them, you’ve got the top seeds Kestelboim-Romboli, so most of the potential match-ups in this quarter could be quite close. The top seed does have a good streak going at Szczecin with 2018 being the last time that the top seeded pair was stopped short of a semifinal. The #1 seeds have won the titles here just twice though in the last five seasons. Keep an eye on Martos Gomes-Walkow if the top seeds falter. They won a title a couple weeks ago and with Walkow playing on home soil, perhaps there’s an extra boost.
The second quarter really should belong to the three seeds Kalender-Serdarusic. Four straight finals and only one loss in their last 16 matches. On top of that, the other pairs in this section don’t seem to carry as much potential danger as others you’ll find. Kalender-Serdarusic square off with Travaglia-Wehnett first. Travaglia hasn’t won a doubles match since February, carrying a nine match losing skid into this one. Wehnelt has 30+ wins this season, but a lot have come at Futures events, so this pair is going to have tough time I think in round one. The other match in this quarter sees Kielen-Kolar taking on Mansilla Diez-Winter Lopez. The double name duo from Spain did make a final in Todi in mid-August, but have not won consecutive matches in any of the other seven tournaments they’ve played this year. Kielan-Kolar have both done okay with other partners, so I think this opener could go the distance. You can’t count out the survivor from challenging for a semifinal berth, but I’m sticking with Kalender-Serdarusic.
TOP HALF FORECAST
Could this half see two seeded semifinalists? It’s quite possible, but I’m slightly hesitant on the top seeds with their lack of match play together. I would prefer Kalender-Serdarusic between the two seeds and think their set-up is much more likely to give them an opportunity to compete for the finals spot in this half. Keep an eye on Martos Gomes-Walkow as my main Unseeded Menace to monitor.

BOTTOM HALF
(4)Cervantes-Molchanov look the clear-cut class of this third quarter. They’re far from a lock though as they’ve mixed four Challenger finals with six opening round losses this year. They are very much feast or famine in that regard. Getting young Polish wildcards Knitter-Sterniczuk to start should be advantageous. The Polish players will be making their Challenger debut in doubles with their previous doubles play coming at the Futures level. Maybe against another pair they might be able to seize some momentum playing on home soil, but this seems like a big uphill battle. Opposite of that match are two pairs making their debuts together. It should fall into the favor of Sachko-Vrbensky who have made seven combined finals at this level. Chlodnicki-Tsitsipas have both spent more time at Futures than anywhere else, so the experience gap is substantial. And yes, that is the youngest Tsitsi-bro. Perhaps Sachko-Vrbensky have immediate chemistry here, so don’t rule them out from playing spoiler in this section.
The final quarter houses the all-Polish pair of (2)Matuszewski-Pieczonka. They do have some experience together as I’ve mentioned, but it’s still not much. Cornea-Jans could well be a challenge in round one and part of the “expect the unexpected” nature of Challenger doubles. The match on the other side of this quarter could be a banger. You’ve got four players all ranked between 128-147. Jecan-Pavel have played a ton together with 98 matches since the start of 2025. They did win a clay Challenger earlier this year and made another final. As for Poljak-Ruehl, they’re 0-3 this year, but they made a pair of Challenger finals last year. Clay has been their best surface (9-4), so I would expect this one to be competitive. I also would not sleep on the winner here having a shot to push into the semifinals.
BOTTOM HALF FORECAST
If seed squeezes through to the final, (4)Cervantes-Molchanov could be the better choice. That said, there’s some pairs that will be interesting to watch. Two of the first timers in Sachko-Vrbensky and Cornea-Jans particularly could emerge as pests and contenders. The Polish seeds can’t be discounted from being in the mix, but it feels like there are other pairs in this half that might have the better shot.

Grand Slam tennis is fun, but the grinders are back grinding at Challengers just like every other week. It’s new opportunity for titles and a chance to climb up the rankings. History says we’re going to see at least one unseeded finalist, so who is it? Or who are THEY? There’s plenty to pick from, so good luck! I’ll take a flyer on Jecan-Pavel, even though I didn’t list them in my Unseeded Menaces section. Martos Gomes-Walkow would be my second choice, but I really like that Kalender-Serdarusic pairing. You don’t just roll out of bed and make four finals in a row at any level in tennis. Those are my two selections this week.

I truly appreciate the likes and views each week and don’t expect much in the way of donations, but am thankful to those who have and any who will in the future. That keeps me going during the weeks when balancing real life with this side project get tough. See you on the socials this week.
